Here is Your Weekly AIM:
Watch Me!
A hallmark behavior of all children is observing others. Even little babies are naturally drawn to watch the people around them. I once went to a Chipotle for lunch, and sat at a table beside a young family. Their infant of about 1.5 years repeatedly turned his entire torso in his high chair, away from his family, to watch me eat. Children will stare to the extent that parents have to remind them that it’s rude to stare. But Mother Nature builds this observing behavior in us so we learn to socialize. We learn communication, facial expressions, emotions, non-verbal behavior, and eye contact by observing others.

This week, we suggest that you encourage your child to watch you and others more, in general. Children are not shy to ask their parents and friends to “watch me!” as they move down a slide or demonstrate a newly mastered skill. Model this language and eagerness for attention to your child. Invite their attention with “watch me!” or “watch this!” while you color a picture or cut some carrots. Help them to feel comfortable with observing!

Have fun this week!
